The Mottarone, situated between Lake Maggiore and Lake d’Orta, is considered one of the most beautiful natural balconies in the whole Piedmont and Lombardy.
The visitor’s eye is struck by the summit of Monte Rosa and by the seven lakes (Lake Maggiore, Lake d’Orta, Lake Mergozzo, Lake Varese, Lake Comabbio, Lake Monate, Lake Biandronno) lying in a natural basin.
Captivating lake views unfold during a 20-minute cable-car journey to the top of 1491m-high Monte Mottarone. On a clear day, you can see Lago Maggiore, Lago d’Orta, and Monte Rosa on the Swiss border. At the Alpino mid-station (where you change cars) a profusion of alpine plants flourishes in the Giardino Botanico Alpinia.
The mountain itself offers good hiking and biking trails, and there’s a small winter ski station at the top. The ticket includes a short chairlift ride that transports you from the top of the Funivia to the mountain’s summit.
Rates are cheaper from November to March (adult/reduced €13.50/8.50, to Alpino station €8/5.50).
